Kong: Skull Island

The New ‘Kong: Skull Island’ Trailer Is Exciting … And Surprisingly Funny

It must be difficult to make a King Kong movie feel fresh at this point, given that there have been seven different films made about the fictional giant ape since the 1933 original, but Kong: Skull Island looks like it could be a winner.

Starring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Samuel L. Jackson, and John C. Reilly, the new film directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts takes the familiar set-up of pretty much every King Kong movie — a group of explorers, scientists, and military personnel travel to a remote island and discover more than they bargained for — but establishes a fun and humorous tone that we were not expecting. Skull Island still looks like it packs its fair share of thrills and frights, especially with the creepy “skull crawlers” lurking around, but it’s refreshing to see that Vogt-Roberts isn’t going for the darker, practically horror-inspired tone that Peter Jackson established in his 2005 film.

Kong: Skull Island hits theaters March 10, 2017.
