Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to come to an end with the untitled Avengers 4 in 2019 and the franchise is going to see some drastic changes in the wake of that film.
This according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige who, while not going into specifics, told Collider that there may be a new direction in store for the MCU after the events of Avengers 4.
“We have an idea, and it’s gonna be very, very different.”
While Avengers 4 will mark an endpoint for Phase 3 of the MCU, which kicked off with Captain America: Civil War in 2016, Feige revealed that whatever comes next may not be Phase 4 after all, and could be something entirely new.
“Certainly as we get to Infinity War there is a sense of climax if not a conclusion to, by the time we’re at untitled Avengers 4, the 22 movies that will have encompassed the first three phases of the MCU […] I don’t know if it’s Phase 4, it might be a new thing.”
With speculation that some of the franchise’s biggest stars, such as Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, may be planning to exit the franchise after wrapping up Avengers 4, it’s possible that Marvel could be looking to introduce a whole new generation of heroes for ‘Phase 4’ or even rebooting things altogether. An alternate universe perhaps?
As for Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel, Feige confirmed that the films are no longer being filmed simultaneously, but being shot back-to-back instead.
“It became too complicated to cross-board them like that, and we found ourselves — again, something would always pay the price. We wanted to be able to focus and shoot one more and then focus and shoot another movie.”
As for why the title of Avengers 4 hasn’t been revealed yet, Feige told CinemaBlend that it’s because revealing the title would qualify as a spoiler. Feige was also asked whether or not Thanos, the main villain of Infinity War, will be in Avengers 4 as well and his answer was quite cryptic. “They’re two very different movies. That’s all I’ll say.”
Avengers: Infinity War is due out May 4, 2018, while Avengers 4 is set to launch the following year on May 3. In the meantime Marvel’s next film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, hits theaters on May 5, 2017 and is already receiving rave reviews.
