UPDATE: Erik Davis of Fandango is reporting that the solo Batman movie will indeed be called ‘The Batman’ and that Ben Affleck is still attached to star.

Original Story: It’s been a turbulent couple of months for Warner Bros. and their upcoming solo Batman film. Ben Affleck was originally set to direct the film, in addition to starring in it, but he stepped down as director last month, citing his inability to successfully balance the two important roles.

Earlier this month, it seemed as if the studio had found Affleck’s replacement in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves, but these reports were initially retracted after it appeared that negotiations between the two sides had broken down. Now, Deadline is reporting that this was merely a blip in the radar and that Reeves has officially signed on as director.

According to Deadline, Reeves was initially hesitant to take the job after Warner Bros. offered him less money than he could have made on a different film project. Now it seems that both parties have reached an agreement, although it remains unclear whether or not Affleck is even staying on to star in the film. There have been rumors that Affleck is considering stepping away from the DC Extended Universe altogether after he plays the Dark Knight again in Justice League, which comes out later this year.

Either way, even if Affleck decides to leave, the Batman film will be in capable hands with Reeves, who has quickly built an impressive resume as a blockbuster director. His next film, War for the Planet of the Apes, is due out this summer and already has strong early buzz.

The Batman, as it’s tentatively being called, is still set for a 2018 release.
