Last month, it was reported that Jack Nicholson was ready to retire from acting, but it looks like that was all hogwash as Variety is reporting that Nicholson has signed on to headline a new movie for Paramount, which would mark his first onscreen appearance in nearly a decade.

According to Variety’s sources, Nicholson has signed on to play the titular lead in a remake of Toni Erdmann, a German-Austrian comedy that is currently up for a Best Foreign Film Academy Award. Nicholson’s character is described as “a practical joking father who tries to reconnect with his hard working daughter by creating an outrageous alter ego and posing as a CEO’s life coach.”

That sounds exactly like the kind of role Nicholson would be interested in, which probably helps explain another interesting development, which is that the actor was apparently a huge fan of the original; so much so that he went to Paramount personally with the idea of starring in a remake. Considering Nicholson has been reluctant to do any onscreen work in the last few years, this is clearly a passion project for the actor.

So far, there is no word on who will direct the Toni Erdmann remake or even who Nicholson’s co-stars will be besides Kristen Wiig, but we do know that it is being produced by Adam McKay and Will Ferrell alongside Maren Ade, writer and director of the original, so it’s definitely in good hands so far.
