Suicide Squad is currently tracking to have the biggest August opening of all time, with some estimating that it could earn $140 million this weekend. The current record holder is Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy with $94.3 million, so it’s understandable that Suicide Squad director David Ayer is amped about potentially surpassing Marvel for box office supremacy. Although, he may have gotten a little too carried away in sticking it to Marvel at the film’s world premiere this week.
Ayer took the stage last night in New York City to introduce his new film when an excited DC Comics fan in the audience shouted “F**k Marvel.” Ayer enthusiastically shouted the same thing back, prompting cheers from the crowd.
So was this a case of Ayer going to war with Marvel and declaring for DC supremacy? Not really. Ayer quickly tweeted out an apology, so all the Marvel zombies can put away their Thor hammers and Hulk gloves because there’s no bad blood here … even if it does look like DC is about to trounce Marvel at the box office this weekend. #ShotsFired
Sorry about getting caught up in the moment and saying f*ck Marvel. Someone said it. I echoed. Not cool. Respect for my brother filmmakers.
