Move over Anna Kendrick, there’s another actress who wants a shot at playing Squirrel Girl!
Shannon Purser, who plays the totally underutilized Barb on the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, has expressed her interesting in playing the fan-favorite Marvel hero. Following a tweet Purser sent out, the topic came up in an interview with Revelist, where the actress explained how Squirrel Girl differs from a lot of other superheroes, specifically the female ones.
“I think Squirrel Girl is just adorable but at the same time is totally boss and completely awesome. I think people need a character like that. It’s easy in the superhero realm to feel like a lot of the female superheroes we see are grown women who are super responsible and know what their purpose is and that kind of thing. Squirrel Girl is a little bit younger and like a real person, trying to figure out her life and then also having to save the world. I love that.”
While we’re sure Purser would probably make an excellent Squirrel Girl, it’s important to remember that Marvel has not revealed any plans for a live-action adaptation and talk of a potential movie is all just speculation at this point. However, it is interesting to note that there is a pretty wide age gulf between the two actresses who are campaigning hardest for the roles, as Kendrick, 30, may be less inclined to sign onto a potential multi-picture deal than the 19-year-old Purser (it also helps Purser’s case that Squirrel Girl, aka Doreen Green is college-age).
Still, we may have to give Kendrick the edge for the moment in this currently non-existent race. After all, she has Edgar Wright in her corner.
