Star Wars: The Force Awakens had one of the most diverse casts in a blockbuster film last year, so it’s hardly surprising to see that the series is planning on extending that representation to the gay community as well.
According to J.J. Abrams, putting a black lead in the franchise (John Boyega’s Finn) was only the beginning of plans for increased inclusivity in the series, which will extend to homosexual characters as well. “When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity. So of course.”
“To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.” [via: The Daily Beast]
It’s refreshing to see a blockbuster franchise as big as Star Wars address something like this so bluntly, even though it’s sure to incite all kinds of rage among insecure, homophobic fanboys. One community that is sure to greet this news with open arms is the legion of Finn/Poe shippers out there; It looks like Star Wars’ newest bromance could potentially become much more serious in future installments!
