Star Wars: The Last Jedi Is Officially 2017’s Highest-Grossing Movie, Surprising No One

Though it was only in theaters for the last two and a half weeks of 2017, Star Wars: The Last Jedi managed to rake in $533.1 million in ticket sales at the domestic box office, making it the No. 1 movie of the year in North America.

The previous champion was another Disney release (big surprise, right?), Beauty and the Beast, which now sits in second place with $504 million. However, as of January 1st, 2018, Beauty and the Beast remains the No. 1 movie of 2017 worldwide with close to $1.3 billion in earnings. The Last Jedi may very well pass that mark but for now, Beauty and the Beast remains the highest-grossing 2017 release overall.

The Last Jedi has now surpassed Rogue One’s domestic box office total of $532.2 million but The Force Awakens’ $936.7 million tally remains far out of reach (that film is still the highest-grossing domestic release in history). Still, being the second highest-grossing Star Wars movie of all time (not adjusted for inflation) isn’t too shabby.
