‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Expected To Match Avatar’s Legendary Box Office Numbers

While much of the speculation surrounding the box office take for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has revolved around whether or not the film will shatter records for the biggest debut, analysts also want to draw attention to the second weekend box office draw, which they expect to be just as big as the first’s…which is exactly what James Cameron’s Avatar did in during its December debut back in 2009.

Speaking to The Wrap, Disney’s distribution chief Dave Hollis explained why that second weekend is so important.

“That next weekend, and the whole next week with everyone being available, puts us in a very strong spot. Only 18 percent of students will be out of school on opening day, Friday, Dec. 18. That number will climb to over 80 percent for December 21-25 and be at essentially 100 percent from December 28-January 1,” Hollis explained.

Hollis went on to note that no December release has ever crossed the $100 million mark in its opening weekend, so it’s looking like Disney is focused on the long haul when it comes to The Force Awakens. They’ll need it if they hope to catch Avatar’s $2.78 billion total worldwide box office take, but if any film has a chance of doing that, it’s Star Wars.
