Star Wars: Rogue One had a huge presence at Star Wars Celebration 2016 this past weekend, with new details and footage revealed for the upcoming spin-off film, which hits theaters this December. One of the more surprising revelations to emerge out of the event is that Rogue One will break from tradition in a major way by not featuring the franchise’s iconic opening crawl.

The John Williams-scored opening crawl is perhaps one of the most recognized framing devices in all of pop culture, so to have a Star Wars film not use it is a pretty significant move on Disney and Lucasfilm’s part. However, as Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told ET over the weekend, it’s looking like all future Star Wars spin-offs won’t have an opening crawl either:

“You know, we’re in the midst of talking about it, but I don’t think these films will have an opening crawl. I think that’s what we kind of telegraphed at the beginning of the event today.”

While Kennedy didn’t cite a specific reason for the decision, it appears that Lucasfilm is dropping the opening crawl in order to differentiate the spin-offs from the saga films. It will be interesting to see whether Rogue One features a new opening credits sequence or just omits one altogether in favor of a cold open.
