Star Wars: Ron Howard Will Take Over Directing the Han Solo Spin-Off Movie

After “creative differences” caused Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to get fired/step down from directing the upcoming Star Wars spin-off about a young Han Solo, Lucasfilm announced today that Oscar-winning director Ron Howard is stepping in to fill the void.

“At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”

Howard, 63, directed his first film in 1969 and has been in charge of classic films like Apollo 13 and Beautiful Mind, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director.

The still untitled Han Solo spin-off is scheduled to be released May 25, 2018. It stars Alden Ehrenreich as Solo, Donald Glover as a young Lando Calrissian, and Woody Harrelson as Beckett (Han’s mentor). Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are also among the starring roles, although their exact characters remain unknown.
