The friendship between Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega) is one of the most charming aspects of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as the two characters establish a pretty unshakable bond by the end of the film. Although there seem to hints of a budding romance — with Finn coyly asking whether Rey has a boyfriend at one point — Boyega has confirmed that Rey and Finn are just really good friends.
Speaking with Variety, Boyega addressed the future of Finn and Rey’s relationship, specifically when it comes to the next film in the series, Star Wars: Episode VIII. “Daisy and I, we’re friends. Finn and Rey — they’re just friends,” Boyega said. “Finn is a stormtrooper so he doesn’t really know what’s going on.”
Boyega also discussed what director Rian Johnson is bringing to the table for Episode VIII, claiming that the director is approaching the film from a totally different angle than J.J. Abrams did with The Force Awakens, noting that the film will be even bigger than its predecessor. “Rian Johnson is great. It’s a different take, darker, bigger. Someone will say: ‘How do you get bigger than ‘Force Awakens?’ But it’s crazy.”
Star Wars: Episode VIII won’t hit theaters until Dec.15, 2017, but fortunately, there’s another Star Wars movie to hold us over in the form of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which releases later this year on Dec.16.
