For a franchise that has had so many different races, both alien and human, over the course of its 50 year history, it’s shocking that there has yet to be a single openly gay Star Trek character. Star Trek Beyond will change all of that. Be warned that there are minor SPOILERS for the film below.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Starship Enterprise helmsman Kikaru Sulu — played by John Cho — will come out in the new film, which hits theaters later this month. It will not only be revealed that Sulu is in a committed relationship with another man, but that they have a daughter together.

Cho recently discussed this news with the Herald Sun, where he made assurances that the reveal will be understated and not distract from the rest of the movie. “I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out of it, which is where I hope we are going as a species — to not politicize one’s personal orientations,” the actor said.

Sulu’s homosexuality can be read as a touching tribute of sorts to George Takei, who played the character from 1966 through 1991. Although Sulu was depicted as being straight, Takei was not, as the actor came out in 2005 after decades of keeping his orientation a secret.
