Leave it to Stan Lee to the craziest (and yet totally believable) things.
The Marvel Comics guru spoke to The Big Issue recently and stated that he thinks a Star Wars/Avengers crossover film is definitely within the realm of possibility:
“Obviously the people who produce these [movies] are looking to be as successful as possible. If they feel that incorporating Star Wars with the Marvel characters will be very successful, they’ll find a way to do it. Can you imagine Spider-Man saying, ‘May the force be with you’? It may come to that!”
“I created the Avengers by taking many of our characters and making a team out of them,” Lee says. “We can have as many characters join the Avengers as we want to for future movies. That might be fun, all of a sudden Luke Skywalker is an Avenger!”
While it would be all-too-easy to chock this up to the musings of an out of touch old man (and we’d never accuse someone of Stan Lee’s stature of being that), Lee does bring up some valid points. Disney owns the rights to both franchises, so mashing them together is definitely within the realm of possibility. Besides, crossover events are a regular occurrence in comics; why not in movies too?
Of course, producing movies is a much different beast than having a few writers and artists collaborate on a comic book, as there are many parties and interests at play. Not to mention that the Star Wars and Marvel brands are pretty booked up with upcoming projects as it is. Still, there’s always a chance right?
