Following Hugh Jackman’s reveal this week that his third and final solo outing as Wolverine will be titled “Logan,” The Wrap has landed a huge scoop on the film’s plot thanks to an insider close to the project.
According to The Wrap’s source, Logan is set in the year 2024 and is set to be the darkest X-Men film to date. In this grim future, mutant births are in decline and a government-run operation called “Transigen” is rounding up mutant children and turning them into killing machines. That child’s hand that Wolverine is holding in the film’s poster? It belongs to a young girl with two claws instead of three, who may or may not be X-23.
Things aren’t looking good for Logan either. He’s old and his abilities are weaker than what they once were, as his healing factor doesn’t work so well anymore. He’s also taking care of Professor X, who is also old and in decline, and struggling to control his telepathic abilities. Stephen Merchant plays an Albino mutant named Caliban who helps Logan take care of Professor X. The pair drive a limo together for work.
Well, that certainly doesn’t sound like a good time … But it could be an interesting new spin on the franchise! While it’s still unclear what the ultimate narrative goal of the film is, there is certainly a sense of finality to these plot details that feels fitting considering its Jackman’s last go-round. That being said, it would be a shame if the film ended on too depressing a note considering it’s still a send-off for Jackman, who has played the character since 2000’s X-Men. Then again, maybe Jackman just wants to send Wolvie out to pasture so that no other actor can play him again.
Logan comes out March 3rd, 2017.
