‘Spider-Verse’ Director Hints at Identity of Main Villain in Potential Sequel

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse took a lot of people by surprise in late 2018, and we mean that is a good way. The Sony Pictures animated superhero film didn’t turn a lot of heads when it was first announced, but all that changed once it hit theaters in December. It’s heart-warming story, slick animation style, and incredible soundtrack combined to form what is arguably the best Spider-Man movie ever made — and it’s not even really about Peter Parker at all!

The story centers around Miles Morales and his journey in becoming the new Spider-Man, as he battles his way (with some help) through the likes of Tombstone, Scorpion, Prowler, and Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin. After the movie won critical acclaim, including winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar at the 91st Academy Awards, and box office success ($375+ million), a sequel was inevitable.

In a recent interview with Total Film magazine, co-director Rodney Rothman hints that one of the smaller villains in Into the Spider-Verse might be primed to make a big return. When asked about the fate of Doc Ock (who jumped into the collider in a deleted scene), he responded:

“In the end, we found the movie played fine without us tagging every single possible thing. But we definitely think of Liv as someone who is not gone from the story, and who in many ways, is our most powerful bad guy. She’s manipulating a lot of things to achieve her own grand ambitions.”

The final cut of the movie shows a trio of Spider-People gearing up to battle Olivia Octavius, a female version of the classic Spidey villain. Buuuuuuut then she gets hit my a transport truck and is never seen again, her fate left hanging ambiguously as Miles defeats Kingpin and hands him over to the police.

Who knows what else the sequel might have in store? A post-credits scene featured the voice of Clive Owen as Spider-Man 99, yet another alternate version of the wall-crawler. When the multi-verse is in play, anything is possible. But it sounds like Doctor Octopus will be back!
