Spider-Man may have made an on-point reference to The Empire Strikes Back during the fight against Giant-Man in Captain America: Civil War, but it turns out that the actor who plays him, Tom Holland, doesn’t consider himself much of a Star Wars fan. In fact, he’s never even seen the original trilogy!
In a recent interview with Yahoo, Holland was asked to comment about his memorable Star Wars reference, to which the actor conceded, “I haven’t seen The Empire Strikes Back, I’m not gonna lie,” and then admitted to not having seen any of the original films.
Holland went on to say that he has seen the most recent Star Wars films, stating that he thought The Force Awakens “was dope,” and that he thought both it and Rogue One “were great fun.”
“For some reason I skipped the original Star Wars,” he said. “I don’t know why and I’m very embarrassed.’
It gets worse, unfortunately.
Holland admits to not only having seen the prequel trilogy but that he actually liked those movies, but prefaced his controversial admission by claiming he enjoyed watching them as a kid (which is something I know I’m guilty of). “I’m even more embarrassed to say that I [loved] those movies when I was a kid,” Holland admitted. “Everyone’s like, ‘What? You like those movies?!'”
Tom Holland, who has never seen the original Star Wars movies, will reprise his role in Spider-Man: Homecoming when it hits theaters on July 7, 2017. May God have mercy on our souls.
