For the most part, J.J. Abrams’ rebooted Star Trek film franchise has been well-received by both critics and fans alike and has also performed well at the box office, but for some reason or another, the franchise has been stuck in limbo since Star Trek Beyond hit theatres back in 2016. Fortunately for us, Simon Pegg believes he has the answer.

During a recent chat with Games Radar, Pegg – who plays Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in the film series – discussed the ongoing delays of the beloved film franchise and how the commerical success of the Marvel movies have forever changed the landscape of the film industry.

“The fact is, Star Trek movies don’t make Marvel money. They make maybe $500 million at the most, and to make one now, on the scale they’ve set themselves, is $200 million. You have to make three times that to make a profit.”

The actor went on to explain how Anton Yelchin’s tragic passing really took a toll on everyone and as a result, “enthusiasm to do another” became a struggle.

“I don’t feel like the last one… They didn’t really take advantage of the 50th anniversary. The regimen at the time dropped the ball on the promo of the film. And we’ve lost momentum. I think losing Anton [Yelchin] was a huge blow to our little family, and our enthusiasm to do another one might have been affected by that. So I don’t know.”
