James McAvoy stars as Kevin, a man with 23 different personalities in 2017’s Split, the latest movie from suspense/horror expert M. Night Shyamalan. When one of his personalities kidnaps three young girls, the rest of his identities have to figure out how to compete for time and attention. And according to the synopsis, there may be one more personality hidden inside Kevin somewhere (an M. Night Shyamalan movie with a surprise twist ending? Frankly, we’re shocked. Shocked).
Though Kevin (McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Taylor-Joy), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him — as well as everyone around him — as the walls between his compartments shatter apart. Split has already been screened at some movie festivals, to decent reviews. We’ll have to wait and see if this will be another Shyamalan classic, like The Sixth Sense or Unbreakable. Or a dud, like Lady in the Water or — *shudder* — The Last Airbender. The movie hits theaters in January.
