It’s a sad day for all five Mutt Williams fans out there, as David Koepp, the screenwriter of Indiana Jones 5, has confirmed that Shia LaBeouf’s character is not in the script.
As Koepp tells Entertainment Weekly: “Harrison [Ford] plays Indiana Jones, that I can certainly say. And the Shia LaBeouf character is not in the film.”
The “Shia LaBeouf character” was introduced in 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and is often cited as one of that film’s worst features (ed. note: I thought LaBeouf was fine in that film, but I have no strong connection to the character). Unfortunately, LaBeouf has had a tumultuous career of late and his past criticisms of Crystal Skull director Steven Spielberg probably didn’t help his chances of making a return to the franchise.
Speaking of Spielberg, Koepp also revealed that although production on Indiana Jones 5 will begin production soon, the legendary filmmaker has not yet officially signed on to direct> “in terms of when we would start, I think that’s up to Mr. Spielberg and Mr. Ford,” he explained. “If the stars align, hopefully it’ll be his [Spielberg’s] next film.”
Indiana Jones 5 will hit theaters on July 10, 2020.
