‘Rogue One’: More Classic Characters Could Be Surprise Inclusions

When Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters next week, sci-fi fans will be taken way back to the fictional time when Darth Vadar was still using the dark side of the force to rise to power. The movie takes place in the time between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope, meaning that it’s completely possible for characters from the original trilogy could appear.

We already know that Darth Vadar will be front and center, as the Empire attempts to finalize plans and build the Death Star (spoiler alert: they succeed). But in a recent interview with French television network TF1Rogue One director Gareth Edwards gave some interesting answers when asked about other potential characters making an appearance.

Q: Will there be Jedi?

A: Technically yes.

Q: Will there be lightsabers?

A: Darth Vader has one.

Q: Luke Skywalker?

A: No

Q: Will we see Princess Leia?

A: I cannot answer.

Q: R2-D2?

A: I cannot answer.

We already know (from the plot of the original Star Wars) that the Rebel Alliance succeeds in stealing the plans for the Death Star, and Princess Leia transmits a holographic message to Obi-Wan Kenobi via R2-D2. It’s possible that Rogue One will give us more details about how this happened exactly, meaning Edwards’ deliberately vague answers of “I cannot answer” could be almost seen as confirmations.
