As the longest-serving actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. is probably closer than most to hanging up Iron Man’s boots and moving on to the next stage in his career. Downey is currently under contract to appear in three more Marvel films after Captain America: Civil War — Spider-Man: Homecoming and the two Avengers: Infinity War installments.
Keeping an actor of Downey’s caliber on payroll is increasingly more expensive for Marvel and given that we probably won’t be seeing Iron Man 4 anytime soon, it’s fair to assume that the actor will probably call it quits soon. However, as he tells ABC News, he might not be done after all. “I feel like I could do one more,” says Downey after being asked if he’ll star as Tony Stark/Iron Man in another film after the ones we already know of.
Does this mean we’ll get an Iron Man 4 after all with Downey in the lead role? Given how successful those films have been for Marvel, it seems unlikely that the studio would not at least try to get Downey to say yes to one more outing. That being said, even if he decides to move on after Infinity War, we’ll have had 10 appearances from Downey as Iron Man, so audiences have been pretty spoiled with his presence.
Still, it would only seem fitting to see Robert Downey Jr. leave off on a proper Iron Man, since it was that franchise that got the whole MCU ball rolling in the first place.
