Hellboy creator Mike Mignola wrote a post on Facebook last night that has caused quite a stir. Here’s what it said:

Yes, according to Mignola, there will be a new film in the long-dormant Hellboy franchise, but director Guillermo del Toro and star Ron Perlman are both out. Instead, this will be a full, R-rated reboot directed by Neil Marshall and starring Stranger Things’ David Harbour as Hellboy.

Unfortunately for Hellboy fans who had hoped a third movie involving del Toro and Perlman would come together, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed the story:

‘Hellboy’, the demonic comic book hero-turned- Guillermo del Toro film franchise, is poised to return to the big-screen, this time without the filmmaker at the helm.

Millennium is in negotiations with producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin for a new installment that would reboot and relaunch the property.

I’m conflicted on this, to say the least. On the one hand, it’s great to be getting another Hellboy movie at all and an R-rated one at that. However, the loss of del Toro and Perlman is sure to upset a lot of fans and even though I really like Harbour, I do not envy his position in trying to follow in Perlman’s footsteps on this.
