Sony Pictures is developing a movie focused on Marvel femme fatales Black Cat and Silver Sable, with hopes to start filming this fall. The studio already has a script in hand written by Thor: Ragnarok scribe Chris Yost and will begin searching for a director soon.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that both the Black Cat/Silver Sable movie and the recently announced Venom solo flick “are not offshoots from the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming but rather projects spun from the overall franchise and based on Marvel’s Spider-Man universe.”
The report also notes that Sony has been developing a female-led Spider-Man spinoff since 2014, with Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy previously having written a draft of the script.
Black Cat, aka Felicia Hardy, is a cat burglar while Silver Sable, aka Silver Sablinova, is a war criminal-hunting mercenary and both characters have functioned as allies and adversaries of Spider-Man over the years. Black Cat in particular has a romantic history with Peter Parker, but it’s unclear if this new film will explore that angle of the character.
Although Rogue One’s Felicity Jones played a character named ‘Felicia’ in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it was never made explicitly clear whether she had any connection to the Black Cat. If production for the Black Cat/Silver Sable movie goes through, it would mark the first official big screen appearance for both characters.
