In a seeming attempt to remind everyone that there are currently at least two competing Joker movies in the works, news has come out that Warner Bros. has an actor in mind to play the Clown Prince of Crime in the gritty “origin story” movie being directed by Todd Phillips (Old School).
As reported by Variety, Warner Bros. views Phillips’ Joker movie as a prestige picture, so it makes sense that the studio has been in talks with three time Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix to portray the sadistic Batman villain in his early years. It probably doesn’t hurt that Martin Scorsese is producing this thing, which has been described as “super dark and real” by former MMA fighter Brendan Schaub, who is involved in Phillips’ movie.
[Ed. Note: This Joker movie is not to be confused with the “criminal love story” being developed by Crazy Stupid Love’s Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, which will focus on the relationship between Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.]
To summarize: WB is developing a Joker movie directed by a guy who almost exclusively makes “Bro” comedies and which could potentially star a legitimately talented actor in Joaquin Phoenix. One can only assume that Phoenix saw Heath Ledger’s posthumous Supporting Actor win for The Dark Knight and figures he can also turn in an award-worthy performance. Whatever the reason for this strange film project to exist, it’s definitely the Joker movie we’re most looking forward to at this point.
