Nearly eight years after the release of the original film, James Cameron has officially started production on not just Avatar 2, but all four(!) planned Avatar sequels.
As reported by Deadline, the long-awaited blockbuster sequels have begun filming in Manhattan today after suffering numerous delays over the near-decade since the original film shattered box office records back in 2009, eventually becoming the highest-grossing film of all time.
Avatar 2 is slated for a 2020 release, but all four movies will be shot in succession. With an estimated collective budget of over $1 billion USD, this will be the most expensive movie shoot in history by a wide margin.
Details surrounding characters and plot are still pretty scarce at this stage, but it has been confirmed that Stephen Lang will reprise his role as the villainous Colonel Quaritch throughout the sequels. Additionally, most of the cast is said to consist of familiar faces, so there’s a good chance this means stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana could be back as well.
With his Avatar films officially starting production and news that he will be overseeing the reboot of the Terminator franchise in the coming years, this may very well be the busiest James Cameron has ever been. Let’s hope it results in good things for both franchises!
