Set before the events of the original Star Wars, Rogue One will tell the story of how the Rebellion came to possess the Death Star plans we see Princess Leia give to R2-D2 in the first scene of George Lucas’s 1977 masterpiece. While the film will feature a cast of mostly new characters, there will be a few familiar ones, including the Dark Lord of the Sith himself.
This week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly contains a number of new details about Rogue One, including confirmation that Darth Vader will be in the film. The classic Star Wars villain had been rumored to be making an appearance for awhile, but this is the first official confirmation we’ve received. Not much else is known at this time, although it does sound like the new Imperial villain played by Ben Mendelsohn will have an uneasy relationship with Vader, as EW reports that his character is “eager to earn the favor of the Emperor — and avoid the wrath of his black-masked enforcer.
Although nothing has yet been confirmed, Han Solo is rumored to be the other big name Star Wars character to be a part of Rogue One. If he is indeed in the film, Solo will be played by Alden Ehrenreich, who landed the role earlier this year, as opposed to original actor Harrison Ford. At any rate, with EW’s Rogue One issue hitting stands this Friday, we should have more information about Darth Vader’s role and other details soon.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters Dec. 14.
