Sir Patrick Stewart will be reprising his longtime role as Professor Charles Xavier in the upcoming Wolverine 3 alongside Hugh Jackman’s title character. And just like Jackman, it looks like this will be Stewart’s final bow in the role he’s played since 2000.

Although Stewart notes that “you can never, ever say it’s the end,” he did admit to London reporters this week that this feels like the time for him to make his exit from the X-Men franchise.

“I would imagine this is probably the end of the franchise for me. But the thing about science fiction and fantasy is that you can never, ever say it’s the end, it’s over,” he told ITV.

“Jean Grey vaporized me [in X-Men: The Last Stand]. From which you would think there would be no return. But watch out in March. I’m going to be back.

If this is indeed Stewart’s last time playing the telekinetic professor, it sounds like it will be quite the sendoff, as the actor teased that fans can expect “a very different Charles Xavier … nothing like the Charles Xavier you’ve seen in the past.”

While no official plot details have been released, Wolverine 3 is expected to be an adaptation of the Old Man Logan story developed by Mark Millar and artist Steve McIven. Set in a dystopian future where the X-Men are extinct, Old Man Logan follows Wolverine as he comes out of hiding to face a new batch of foes. It will be very interesting indeed to see how Xavier might play into that kind of storyline.

Wolverine 3 is directed by James Mangold, who also helmed 2013’s The Wolverine, and is due out in March 2017.
