New ‘Star Wars’ Theory Explains Why Obi-Wan “Forgot” About The Droids

One of the reasons why the Star Wars prequels are so maligned by fans is that certain elements of their plots seemed to contradict events that happened in the original trilogy. For example, we learn that it’s Qui-Gon Jinn that trains Obi-Wan Kenobi, not Master Yoda (although Yoda did train him for a time when he was young) and that there’s no way Leia could have remembered her mother since Padme literally dies right after giving birth to her.

Another apparent plot hole that gets brought up a lot is Obi-Wan’s insistence that he doesn’t remember owning any droids. Of course, we know that he didn’t actually own C-3PO or R2-D2 during the Clone Wars, but he gives no indication that he even recognizes the droids, despite encountering them frequently throughout the prequel trilogy.

However, according to a new fan theory, Obi-Wan’s line has nothing to do with not recognizing the droids, but is instead meant as a sign of respect to his longtime allies. Here’s the theory, courtesy of Reddit user mybustersword:

“We saw how much R2 did and accomplished in ep 1-3, and how much the heroes owe to him. He practically saved their asses a dozen times over. When Obi-Wan says that controversial line of never having owned a Droid, he has a little glint in his eyes. He’s not saying “keep quiet you, you’ll blow our cover.” he’s saying no mother… in this galaxy can own R2, he’s intelligent and reliable in a way no other Droid has been. He is correcting Luke about droid ownership.”

While this idea of Obi-Wan being some kind of droid rights activist is a bit presumptive for a film made in 1977, it does offer an entirely new way of interpreting the old Jedi’s now-infamous line. If we go by this reasoning, Obi-Wan is actually being quite progressive and is telling Luke that a droid like R2 cannot be owned because he’s a hero.

That being said, that whiny golden tin man C-3PO is totally fair game,
