Mark Ruffalo Explains Why He Didn’t Get An Avengers Tattoo With The Rest Of The Team

With the end of their time together fast approaching, the original Avengers co-stars all got matching tattoos earlier this year … with the exception of Mark Ruffalo, who opted to not get inked.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Ruffalo elaborated on why he didn’t get a matching tattoo alongside co-stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johannson and Jeremy Renner, and his reason was pretty straightforward: he’s “afraid of needles.”

He jokingly added, “I’ve kind of got a punk rock soul and I felt like ‘dude, everyone has tattoos. I’m going to be punk rock and not get the tattoo.'”

However, there is still a chance Ruffalo will change his mind. Referring to the upcoming Avengers 4, the actor said, “It’s not over, there’s still another movie … honestly, I feel left out and I’m working up the courage to get needled.”

Back in May, Robert Downey Jr. revealed the tattoo news, stating that “five of the original six Avengers got a tattoo, and the sixth was the tattoo artist, who gave it to five of us, the one who opted out being Mark Ruffalo.” The tattoo is an Avengers logo design created by Joshua Lord that mixes the original logo with the number six to represent the original six Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Mark Ruffalo will reprise his role as Dr. Bruce Banner/The Hulk in Avengers 4, which is expected to reunite the original six for a desperate last stand against Thanos, the meglomaniacal villain who successfully wiped out half of the universe at the end of this year’s Avengers: Infinity War. If that doesn’t convince Ruffalo to set aside his fear of needles and get the tattoo, nothing will.
