With all the trailers coming out on what feels like a daily basis at this point, it feels like there won’t be any secrets left by the time Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters December 18. One secret that is almost surely not going to leak however is the mystery surround Luke Skywalker’s role in the film and that’s because Mark Hamill is keeping things really close to his chest.
According to Hamill, his non-disclosure agreement (NDA) actually contains a clause prohibiting him from revealing a big secret. Essentially, if the secret leaks before December 18, Hamill will lose out on a sizable amount of money. The actor had a similar deal with 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, a film that contained one of the biggest plot twists in movie history that somehow wasn’t leaked beforehand.
That secret was of course the big reveal that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father, a plot detail that was only known by George Lucas, Empire director Irvin Kirshner, and Hamill (the line spoken on set by David Prowse indicated that Obi-Wan Kenobi killed Luke’s father). Hamill successfully kept that secret (he didn’t even tell his wife!), but the one he’s holding for The Force Awakens might be an even bigger deal — Hamill’s not even supposed to confirm he’s in the movie!
Check out the interview below (Hamill starts talking about Star Wars around the 11:30 mark). We have a little less than a month to go to find out if Luke’s reveal will be an even bigger deal than Papa Vader was 35 years ago.
