Mark Hamill Begged George Lucas To Remove This Line From ‘Star Wars’

While Star Wars is one of the most successful and beloved franchises in movie history, it isn’t immune to criticism. For instance, while it’s given us some eminently quotable lines (“I’ve got a bad feeling about this,” and “May the Force be with you,” are two that spring instantly to mind), the dialogue sometimes verges on hokey. That being said, while there are some cheesy lines that made it into the final draft of the original 1977 Star Wars, one line was so bad that Mark Hamill actually begged director George Lucas to cut it completely.

Heat Vision recently uncovered an old interview Hamill did on The Tonight Show in 1977, not long after A New Hope was released. According to the young actor, there was one line of dialogue in the script that he simply couldn’t abide Luke Skywalker uttering and pleaded with Lucas to get rid of it.

“Boy, I’ll never forget it as long as I live,” Hamill told host Johnny Carson. “I sometimes dream about this line.”

We would transcribe the line here, but Hamill utters it so fast, we’re not sure we’d be able to write out the whole thing. Plus, you just have to hear him say it in character. While we could easily imagine a very whiny Luke saying this, we’re happy cooler heads prevailed and it never saw the light of day.
