Jared Leto has had his say about why he thinks so many of his Joker scenes were cut from David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (he basically thinks they were too hardcore for audiences to handle) and now his on-screen love interest has weighed in on the great DC conspiracy.
During an episode of Tipsy Talk with host Hazel Hayes, Margot Robbie discussed her hope for a Harley Quinn Spin-off, explaining that she’s “trying to make that happen.” Naturally, the discussion shifted to Leto and all of those deleted scenes audiences
didn’t get to see were spared from seeing. David Ayer has previously confirmed that there are at least ten minutes of deleted scenes for the movie, but he hasn’t specified how many of those scenes involve Harley and the Joker (or if they’re in them at all).
As Robbie explains, not only was there quite a bit of Harley/Joker material left on the cutting room floor, it was left there for a very good reason:
“There was so much of our backstory… they probably realized that the emotional through-line of the story had to be the mission we were on, and kind of explaining The Enchantress’ position and all that kind of stuff, and the backstory stuff — though it’s like magic… there’s a lot but it just didn’t make sense to confuse the present storyline with that.”
While we won’t know whether or not Robbie’s explanation holds true until those deleted scenes are released and/or cobbled together into a future spin-off movie, the revelation that that material was cut so as to not distract from Suicide Squad’s main plot certainly makes sense. The argument has been made that you could cut out all of the Joker material from the film and not much would change, and based on Robbie’s own testimonial, it’s now pretty easy to see why.
