We’ve all seen it a hundred times by now. The scene from Star Wars: The Force Awakens where new villain Kylo Ren speaks to the burnt-out shell of Darth Vader’s helmet and promises to “finish what you started.”
It was featured prominently in basically every trailer and TV spot, all of which were shown about a bajillion times as marketing for the movie reached peak levels in late 2015. In fact, here it is again, just to bring you up to speed,
Now, how Kylo Ren actually got the helmet in the first place is a bit of a mystery — hopefully a question that will be answered in the next movies. In the meantime, it turns out that isn’t even Darth Vader’s real helmet at all!
Dave Prowse, the actor who played Vader, shared this picture on his Facebook page of the actual helmet used at the end of Return of the Jedi, when Vader’s body was burned to a crisp in a funeral pyre on Endor. Yup, that’s a legit 30-year old movie prop. It’s still kind of gruesome. And seems to have hair, for some reason.
Turns out Kylo Ren is worshiping somewhat of a false god. But no one should tell him, because he might get a bit cranky.
