John Kraskinski Reveals Why He Didn’t End Up Playing Captain America

While everyone now associates Captain America with Chris Evans (who, for the record, IS Captain America as far as we’re concerned), the reality is that a quite a few actors had a shot at donning the stars and stripes when Marvel was initially casting the part.

John Krasinski, who played Jim Halpert on The Office, came close to getting the part. During a recent appearance on Conan, the actor explained that he even screen-tested to play Cap and got to put the costume on. But then Thor walked by…

As Krasinski explains it, Chris Hemsworth happened to walk by him in his Thor costume while he was putting on the Cap suit and seeing Hemsworth’s impressive physique in the flesh caused Krasinski to get cold feet about playing a superhero.

“I went, ‘I’m good. This is stupid. That’s okay, I’m not Captain America,'” he said while laughing.

While there is surely more to the story than this—after all, Chris Pratt got shredded to play a superhero and he was in much worse shape than Krasinski when he auditioned—Krasinski’s explanation is still hilarious because it’s totally relatable. Who among us wouldn’t take one look at Chris Hemsworth and feel totally inadequate, especially if they were trying out to play a superhero alongside him?

There’s just no competing with Hemsworth and his muscles, it seems.
