Jeremy Renner Reveals Why He Wanted Marvel To Kill Off Hawkeye

Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is arguably the weak link in the Avengers chain, as it’s difficult for the sharpshooter to add much to the unit when godlike beings such as The Vision and Thor are around. Although Renner may not agree with that sentiment exactly, he was prepared to see Hawkeye killed off after seeing how the first Avengers movie totally mishandled the character.

During a recent Q&A at London Film and Comic-Con, Renner revealed that he was disappointed in how Hawkeye was handled in Joss Whedon’s first Avengers film, particularly how he was reduced to being Loki’s minion for most of the film.

“[I was] a little frustrated, because I was so excited to figure out who Hawkeye was.”

This prompted the actor to try and leave the door open for the character to be killed off.

“I just had a heart attack in every scene,” he said, noting that he’d stop to clutch his chest in the middle of the shoot, much to the confusion of the cast and crew. When asked what he was up to, he told them, “I’m giving you an option, if you just want to kick me out of this movie. Just you know, at any given moment, if you wanna kill me off, daddy’s gonna be having a heart attack.”

Fortunately for Renner and Hawkeye fans (well, the ones who actually enjoy Renner’s interpretation, that is), subsequent Marvel films have given Hawkeye more to do and Renner admits that he no longer wants to see the character killed off. He apparently “can’t wait to explore him more” and noted that “there’s some really cool ideas coming up.”

I can only hope that one of the “really cool ideas” is an adaptation of Matt Fraction’s incredible Hawkeye comics. Come on Marvel, make it happen!
