Jennifer Lawrence reprises her role as the shape-shifting mutant Mystique when X-Men: Apocalypse opens at the end of May. Whether her character survives or not, Lawrence’s three-picture deal to star in the films based on the hit comic books will expire. But she didn’t close the door on returning for more, saying that one special condition has to be met.
“[Michael] Fassbender and [James] McAvoy and I were all talking,” says Lawrence, according to Entertainment Weekly. “Like, ‘Will you come back?’ ‘I dunno.’ ‘I’ll come back, if you come back.’ Fox should be terrified because the deal we made was like if one of us doesn’t come back, none of us are.”
Fassbender and McAvoy also had three-picture deals (along with Nicholas Hoult, who plays a young Beast) to star in the X-Men series. If they don’t return, it will mean that an entire reboot will be required for future X-Men movies, with new stars, new characters, and new storylines.
Lawrence, who has previously talked about how much she hates sitting in the makeup chair for hours while Mystique’s blue body paint to be applied, did say that she could be convinced to come back for more, if her schedule allows for it.
“I would love to come back,” says Lawrence. “I love the fans and I love the character. But then you realize how important your year is, like how important three months out of your year is. I don’t know. I shouldn’t be that honest.”
