Thor: Ragnarok is absolutely stacked with talent. We’ll not only get to see Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Anthony Hopkins reprise their respective roles, but newcomers Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, and Karl Urban are also sure to make a big impact (and that’s not even taking into account Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, who is on board as well). Additionally, Jeff Goldblum will also be lending his unique talents to the film and could be playing the most exciting character of the whole bunch, as he discussed with Empire recently.
Goldblum will be playing the Grandmaster, an intergalactic gamesman in the Marvel Universe who challenges heroes and villains across time and space to games of luck and chance. This kind of character already sounds like it fits in perfectly with Goldblum’s wheelhouse and his interpretation of the role only makes it sound more exciting:
“He’s a hedonist, a pleasure-seeker, an enjoyer of life and tastes and smells. I thought, ‘I can do that, I’ll bet!’ I’m working on my part every day. I’m a sponge, researching.”
“[Director Taika Waititi] is encouraging me to improvise and make it my own, and that’s what I’m trying to do. I hope he doesn’t throw me out on the first day!”
Based on that description, the Grandmaster seems to be more of a comedic villain, which should balance out nicely with Cate Blanchett’s more sinister villainess Hela.
Goldblum also revealed that he expects to shoot for “three weeks or a month” in Brisbane, Austrailia, with production on Thor: Ragnarok set to begin on July 4. The film is scheduled to hit theaters November 3, 2017.
