Warning: this post contains SPOILERS for Suicide Squad.
Given how prominently he’s been featured in the film’s advertiseing campaign, it’s surprising just how few scenes Jared Leto has in Suicide Squad, but it turns out that no one may be more surprised than Leto himself.
In a bizarre interview with IGN this week, Leto candidly talked about the Joker’s fate in the film’s second half, where the character simply disappears after being in a helicopter crash only to reappear in the final scene. Leto was asked if he knew what the character was up to during this time and the actor claims that he’s unsure.
“That’s a good question. I have no idea. I think he probably went and had a drink or something. Stretched – once you get blown up in a helicopter your muscles get a little tight.”
IGN also asked Leto about whether or not he was upset that some of his scenes were cut, as the actor claimed in an earlier interview. Here’s his response:
“Were there any that didn’t get cut? I’m asking you, were there any that didn’t get cut? There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn’t even start. I think that the Joker… we did a lot of experimentation on the set, we explored a lot. There’s so much that we shot that’s not in the film.
“If I die anytime soon, it’s probably likely that it’ll surface somewhere. That’s the good news about the death of an actor is all that stuff seems to come out.”
Although Leto doesn’t admit to being upset, it’s hard not to get the sense that he’s a little bitter about the whole situation. After all, this is an actor who spent a considerable amount of time and effort preparing for this role, to the point where he allegedly didn’t break character the whole time he was shooting with the rest of the cast.
IGN also reports that as they were leaving the interview, they told Leto that they hope he doesn’t anytime soon, prompting the actor to respond, “We all die.”
Wow, somebody pray for Jared Leto.
