J.J. Abrams Wishes He Was Directing ‘Star Wars Episode 8’

J.J. Abrams has ushered in a new era of Star Wars thanks to serving as director on The Force Awakens, but he currently has no plans to return to the franchise any time soon…much to his regret, it turns out.

Directing duties for the next installment in the new trilogy are being handled by Looper director Rian Johnson, who is also co-writing the film’s script. According to Abrams’ longtime friend and colleague Greg Grunberg, who has a small cameo as a Resistance pilot in The Force Awakens, J.J. has read the script for Episode VIII and his reaction came as a surprise.

“He read it and said something he never, ever says,”Grunberg tells the Post’s Comic Riffs. “He said: ‘It’s so good, I wish I were making it.’

“He may have said something one time on Lost, with Damon [Lindelof, the co-creator],” continues Grunberg, “but I never hear him express regret like that.” (Via Washington Post)

We can’t wait to see Rian Johnson’s spin on the Star Wars saga, but it is unfortunate that Abrams stepped away from the franchise so soon, as his evident enthusiasm seems to indicate that he doesn’t quite want to be done with it yet. Cheer up, J.J.! Disney is going to be making new Star Wars films from now until the end of time, so you’ll probably get another chance down the road.
