The cake was not a lie.

J.J. Abrams originally attached himself to film versions of Portal and Half Life way back in 2013, but updates have been scarce since then. Sure, Abrams has been busy with a lengthy list of successful projects, but gaming fans have been itching for a silver screen version of Chell and GlaDOS since the original game was released in 2007.

At Wednesday’s red carpet premiere of HBO’s Westworld (surprise, Abrams is involved in that too!), he revealed that progress was being made and there could be an official announcement soon.

“We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we’re very active, I’m hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon,” said Abrams, according to IGN.

Abrams hasn’t revealed whether a potential Portal film would simply recreate the plots of the games or feature a brand new story (and possibly characters) set in the same universe.

“We are having some really interesting discussions with writers, many of whom…once you said you’re doing a movie or show about a specific thing that is a known quantity you start to find people who are rabid about these things. As someone who loves playing Half Life and Portal, what’s the movie of this, it’s incredible when you talk to someone who just ‘gets’ it, it’s like, oh my god, it’s really the seed for this incredible tree you’re growing.”

Portal, and it’s 2011 sequel Portal 2, are beloved by gamers for their engaging gameplay that requires the player to think outside the box to escape various situations, as well as their dark humor.
