Roland Emmerich clearly has no interest in directing a superhero movie, if his recent criticisms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are any indication.
The Independence Day: Resurgence director recently spoke to the Guardian about how his films are more down to Earth (and ostensibly better) than what Marvel’s producing:
“When you look at my movies it’s always the regular Joe Schmo that’s the unlikely hero. A lot of Marvel movies, they show people in funny suits running around. I don’t like people in capes. I find it silly when someone dons a superhero suit and flies. I don’t understand it. I grew up in Germany, that’s probably why.”
Other than the revelation that German people are apparently incapable of relating to superheroes, Emmerich’s comments also turn a blind eye to some of the director’s own “silly” work. As IGN helpfully points out, Emmerich’s Joe Schmos have included such everyday, average blokes as a Special Forces agent resurrected with superpowers, the ghost of a butler who possesses a grandfather clock, and the President of the United States.
Oh and there’s definitely nothing silly about what’s going on in this trailer:
