The Dark Tower

Idris Elba Being Considered For ‘Dark Tower’ Role

The production of the film adaptation for Stephen King’s epic western-fantasy series The Dark Tower has been moving along quickly in recent months, with Nilolaj Ancel (screenwriter for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) attached to direct and Matthew McConaughey being sought after to play the film’s main villain. Now it looks like Sony has made their pick for who they want to play the film’s protagonist.

Deadline is reporting that Idris Elba is the frontrunner for the role of Roland Deschain, AKA The Gunslinger (coincidentally, the title of the first film will be The Gunslinger). While nothing has been confirmed yet, Sony is making a shrewd choice in pursuing Elba, who is fast becoming one of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars, playing the villain in next summer’s Star Trek Beyond and the favorite to play the next James Bond once Daniel Craig finishes his tenure. Although, if Elba takes The Dark Tower job, it’s unlikely that he’d have the time to devote to two huge franchises.

The Dark Tower is set to start production sometime in early 2016, with a planned release date January 13th, 2017.
