Twentieth Century Fox has generally done a pretty good job of handling the X-Men universe on screen, with their latest film Logan already being touted as one of the best comic book movies ever made.
Still, it’s frustrating that the X-Men have yet to encounter the Avengers or the rest of the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Fox and Marvel have yet to work out a deal that would allow any kind of crossover (and it’s unlikely that we’ll see any sort of agreement reached anytime soon). Well, it’s time to despise this whole situation even more now, as Hugh Jackman probably would have kept playing Wolverine if an Avengers/X-Men crossover had come to fruition.
During the New York press junket for Logan the weekend before last, Screen Rant got the chance to interview Jackman and the actor revealed that if he had had the chance to be a part of The Avengers, he probably would have changed his mind about leaving the character behind after Logan.
Jackman was asked if he would have stayed on as Wolverine if Fox and Marvel had been able to sort out the film rights and here’s what he said:
If that was on the table when I made my decision, it certainly would have made me pause. That’s for sure. Because I always love the idea of him within that dynamic, with the Hulk obviously, with Iron Man but there’s a lot of smarter people with MBAs who can’t figure that out [laughter]. You never know.
At the moment, honestly, if I really did have them there, I probably wouldn’t have said this is the last. It just feels like this is the right time [to leave the character].
Basically, if you’re disappointed that Jackman is leaving the X-Men franchise behind, blame the studio execs at Fox and Marvel for not giving him the opportunity to play Wolverine alongside the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers. Thanks a lot, guys.
