Here’s Why James Gunn Won’t Bring Back Yondu For ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

James Gunn was recently asked if he’d consider bringing Yondu back in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and although we’d love to see blue-skinned Ravager return, the director’s response makes a lot of sense. Last night on Twitter, Gunn was asked, “Now can you PLEASE find some way to bring back Yondu?,” to which beloved Marvel director replied, “unless we’re talking about some sort of prequel or flashback, I believe this would nullify Yondu’s sacrifice.”

Back in 2018, Gunn had somewhat of a similar response to the question, saying, “[Yondu] will never be brought back to life as long as I’m around. His passing needs to mean something.”

As a big fan of the character, seeing Yondu return in Vol.3 would be a pleasant surprise. Still, as Gunn mentioned above, Yondu’s resurrection would sully the emotional moment he and Star-Lord shared during Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Not only that, we’d much rather see new characters like Lady Lylla, Nova and Moondragon in the upcoming Guardians movie, rather than Yondu return and

Interestingly enough, during a panel at the Salt Lake Comic-Con in 2017, Michael Rooker was asked if he’d like to see Yondu return, and the actor’s response was slightly different than what Gunn had to say.

“You know you have this strange idea of dying. I don’t understand why people think dying is like, gone. No! I’m just saying! I’m not giving any hints right now! I’m just saying that Yondu has moved on. I mean, there was this whole arrow of my essence, right? There’s this arrow and it flew off into space. It’s going somewhere right? I mean, right? Don’t you think? If it’s going it could, maybe, perhaps one day come back. Hint! That’s a hint, Marvel!”
