Although several trailers have now been released for the upcoming DC Extended Universe film Wonder Woman, we haven’t yet seen what the film’s main villain will look like. In fact, we only just learned a few weeks ago that Gal Gadot’s Diana will be facing off against the God of War Ares (in addition to fighting the Germans in World War I). Now, thanks to the official Wonder Woman toy line, we finally know what Ares looks like in the film.

This first look comes courtesy of Nation of Nerds, who remark that the character looks like a cross between classic Ares and the New 52 version. While it’s unclear why DC has kept the character under wraps for so long, we do worry that it’s for the wrong reasons. It’s safe to assume that Ares doesn’t show up until late in the movie, which means that there probably won’t be much time devoted to developing him as a character.
It would be easy for DC to just make him a villain akin to Doomsday in Batman V Superman — a brutish powerhouse with no personality — but with David Thewlis, better known as Professor Lupin in the Harry Potter films, rumored to be playing the character, we hope that Ares will be a little more nuanced than his (admittedly cool) appearance would suggest.
We’ll find out for sure when Wonder Woman hits theaters June 2.
