Remember back in June of 2014 when it was reported that Harrison Ford had injured his ankle on the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens? It was quite a blow to the production, as filming had to be pushed back a few weeks and it was even rumored at the time that major rewrites had to take place. Although Ford surely didn’t enjoy being out of commission for weeks on end, according to director J.J. Abrams, the injury was actually a blessing in disguise.

Abrams recently spoke with Chris Rock at the Tribeca Film Festival, where the topic of Ford’s injury popped up. As he explains, being forced to halt production while Ford recuperated allowed him to improve the chemistry between Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega).

“When I was on the set of the Millennium Falcon and we started to do work with Rey and Finn, the first time we did it, it didn’t work at all. It was much more contentious. I didn’t direct it right. It was set up all wrong, and when Harrison Ford got injured — which was a very scary day — we ended up having a few weeks off, and it was during that time that I really got to look at what we had done and rewrite quite a bit of that relationship. So when we came back to work again, we actually just reshot from the ground up, those scenes. It was an amazingly helpful thing to get these two characters to where they needed to be.” (Via)

Considering that Rey and Finn’s relationship is arguably the most important one in the whole film, it’s good to hear that something great came out of Ford’s pain. It’s just too bad he won’t be around to improve Episode 8 by falling down the ramp of the Millennium Falcon or some other very un-Han Solo like accident.
