Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is expanding in size and scope considerably over its predecessor, with new allies joining Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and the rest of his team of intergalactic misfits. However, it doesn’t look like the sequel will be adding any more Infinity Stones to the equation, as writer and director James Gunn says that the film is changing things up in the story department and won’t involve the Guardians chasing after one of the stones around the galaxy like they did in the first film.
Gunn discussed Vol .2’s plot a bit earlier this year, where he mentioned that the plot is “not really so much about the Infinity Stones.” It turns out that Vol 2 actually has nothing to do with the Infinity Stones, as Gunn confirmed in a Facebook post that “there will be no Infinity Stones in Vol. 2.”
While Gunn didn’t reveal exactly what the film’s plot center around instead, early reports indicate that it will involve the Guardians venturing out on new adventures in the cosmos, but this time as intergalactic heroes due to saving Xandar from Ronan the Accuser in the first film.
This also means that Thanos (Josh Brolin) won’t have much (if anything) to do with Vol. 2 either. Instead, the primary antagonists will be newcomer Ayesha and the Ravagers, the space pirate group led by Michael Rooker’s Yondu, although it sounds like Yondu may become an ally this time out based on Vol. 2’s brief plot synopsis:
“Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.”
It’s a bit surprising that the Infinity Stones won’t make an appearance in Vol. 2, as two of the six stones have yet to be featured in any Marvel movie. It’s unlikely that the Soul or Time Stone will figure into the plot of Spider-Man: Homecoming, so unless Marvel is saving their reveal for Avengers: Infinity War, we could see one or both of the stones pop up in either Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok, or Black Panther.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017 and comes complete with a new fin for Yondu!
