Things are ramping up for the Gambit solo film, as Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) has all but signed on to direct the project in the wake of original director Rupert Wyatt’s (Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes) departure earlier this Fall. Now that we know that Gambit is coming sometime in 2017, producer/writer Simon Kinberg has revealed more of what we can expect from the X-Men spin-off.
Speaking to Collider last week, Kinberg discussed all of Fox’s upcoming X-Men-related films, including X-Men: Apocalypse and Deadpool. When the topic of Gambit came up, Kinberg had some interesting things to say about what viewers can expect:
“I mean Deadpool obviously has a very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline X-Men movies,” says Kinberg. “The X-Men movies are dramatic and almost operatic, whereas Deadpool is irreverent and hysterical and sort of a dirty R-rated comedy in many ways. And Gambit will have its own different flavor and tone to it, will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way.”
Considering Gambit is traditionally something of a master thief, making the film a heist picture sounds like as good a plan as any. Although, it’s also a lot easier making a “sexy thriller” when you have Channing Tatum in the starring role.
Kinberg also noted that the film should start shooting in the spring, which would make it unlikely (but not impossible) that we’ll see Gambit in 2016. A 2017 release sounds much more likely at this stage.
