It’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything about the Channing Tatum Gambit movie but the X-Men spinoff is not only still happening, it’s going to have a much different feel than most of us were likely expecting.
In a new interview with IGN, Gambit producer and X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg revealed that the movie will have a “romantic or sex comedy vibe” because it makes sense for the lead character.
“When you look at Gambit,” Kinberg said. “he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy.”
In this way, Kinberg sees a parallel between Gambit, and Logan and Deadpool, both of which were major box office hits that allowed their main characters to dictate the overall tone and creative direction. “Deadpool was an R-rated, raunchy comedy. Logan was a western, Gambit’s gonna be a romantic comedy, and New Mutants is very decidedly a horror film.”
“You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely,” Kinberg continued. “It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are.”
Kinberg also touched on the looming Disney-Fox acquisition and said that it’s not stopping Fox from continuing to develop its upcoming superhero projects. “Gambit has a great script and we’re looking to start that movie early next year. Multiple Man, that script’s being worked on right now.” And X-Force? “We’re just waiting for Drew Goddard to be done with releasing his film that comes out in a few weeks, and then he’ll get started on that script to direct.”
Gambit is still slated for a June 7, 2019 release.
